Richard Bickley of Nether Whitacre and Kingsbury, Warwickshire, England

   Ever notice when you are earnestly trying to find out about someone there is either nothing at all where you know that person should have been, or there are two, and it is seemingly impossible to then know which is the person you are seeking?

   In the pursuit of our Warwickshire Bickleys we have that very situation. We know that John Bickley had sons named Richard and Anthony, and Richard having been named in three wills, Richard Bosworth 1597 Baxterley, Richard Melbourne 1600 Over Whitacre, and his father John Bickley’s will in 1635 Baxterley.

   We also know that John Bickley had three children baptized at the small Nether Whitacre parish church between 1611 and 1621. A Richard Bickley is also in the Nether Whitacre where the same record reflects a wife and a daughter, both unnamed in the record, were buried in April and May of 1619.

John B. Threlfall -Madison Ws

The latest issue (Vol. 47 No.3) of the Edsonian arrived today. Let me offer a couple of correction for perhaps the next issue.

  On page 8 you show Susanna as having been nee Orcutt. All future charts or statements re Susanna should show her maiden name as Bickley as your brother discovered. I could kick myself for not finding this fact years ago, for the marriage is recorded in the Mormon IGI for anyone to see. I got copies of several parish registers and tried to track down her parents, ect., but to no avail. I suspect that she was the daughter of Richard Bickley, that when his wife (her mother) died she was reared by a maternal aunt or such, whose name we don’t know, that she was indeed raised in Nether Whitacre, tho there is no record of her there in the parish register all we have so far is that her name was Bickley and her home parish.

  Mr. Threlfall, had learned of the marriage record that stated Samuel Edson and Susanna Bickley were from the Parish of “Whittaker”, and as it appears he believed (at least at the time he wrote to the Edsonian) that it was NETHER Whitacre that was being referred to. Perfectly logical to assume that, and Susanna having known to have been born ca. late 1617, or early 1618, would have preceded the birth of the child that was buried in Nether Whitacre in 1619, and Susanna’s own crst. must have then occurred in another parish.

   I learned of the marriage of Susanna and Samuel independently of the Edsons, and without knowledge anyone else was on to it. The main difference in my assessment of the marriage record is that the “Whittaker” mentioned in the record seemed more likely to me to be referring to OVER Whitacre, for several reasons. the main one being I obtained both Parish registers on microfilm and knew that there was an Anthony Bickley resident at Over Whitacre in 1630, and as I later learned beyond, perhaps even until 1650, and was not able to find any Bickleys in Nether Whitacre in the same time period, 1630’s, which as the marriages occurred in 1635 and 1638 would appear to be most relevant. Coupling that with the fact that the Parish Register from Over Whitacre was severally fragmented and missing entirely for the years that would have recorded Margaret and Susanna, had they been daughters of Anthony Bickley born in that place, made sense to me.

  There is a marriage recorded in the Kingsbury parish register for a Richard Bickley and Frances Croft 23 Sep 1617.  Frances Croft was the daughter of a couple named Anthony and Elizabeth Taylor Croft, and was baptized at Kingsbury, 17 Mar 1593.  Anthony Croft had died previous to the Bickley/Croft marriage, 23 Jun 1617, his death having been recorded in the Kingsbury record, and his wife Elizabeth died ca. July the month following, thus both of her parents had deceased when Frances married Richard Bickley a couple of months later, in September, 1617.

   Richard Bickley and Frances Croft had been married a very short time, it seems, somewhat less than a month, perhaps at the birth of daughter Margery, but it happens, then, as now.  Margerey may even have been born before their marriage, as what we have is a baptism, and anywhere from birth to 6 months, or more, could separate the birth and baptism.

   John Bickley, the father of our Richard Bickley, had two wives, as  stated in his will, and his first wife, (Richard and Anthony Bickley’s mother), was named Margery, the name of the child of Richard Bickley baptized and buried at Kingsbury in 1617. This, I believe, was the first child of our Richard Bickley, born  ca. 14 Oct 1617.

  There is additional information as to a Bickley- Croft connection;

   Another entry in the Kingsbury record, 12 Mar 1618, records a son named Anthony for Richard Bickley. This record is very hard to discern, and is not listed in the index on familysearch, but it can be found in the Kingsbury register.

   This Anthony Bickley b. 1618 is likely the non-conformist Quaker from Baddesley Endsor, Warwickshire that much information, including the 1662 Hearth Tax, can be found in regard to. This Anthony Bickley was also executor of the estate of a man named John Croft, 1661, Coleshill, Warwickshire in which he is stated to have been of Baddesley Ensor.  Frances Croft had a younger brother named John Croft that was baptized 28 Apr 1611, at Kingsbury.   This younger Anthony Bickley is known to have died ca. 1670 in Derbyshire, where he was living with his daughter, Margery Bickley who married  a man named Samuel Fretwell, but is known to have been the same man that was a Quaker, Anthony Bickley from Baddesley Endsor. Anthony is the only child of Richard’s marriage with Frances Croft to survive until adulthood.

  Other records of Richard Bickley beside the marriage and baptisms at Kingsbury are the burials of his wife and daughter in early 1619, at Nether Whitacre.

   Richard Bickley   married again after the death of his first wife, Frances Croft,  July 15 1620 Johanna Horkott, with whom he fathered more children
