Anthony and Katherine (Horkott) Bickley of Over Whitacre, Warwickshire

Samuel Edson and Susanna Bickley were recorded in their marriage record as having been  “of Whittaker”, or Whitacre, Warwickshire, England.  Logically, finding the next link back in Susannah’s ancestry proceeded from that place.  There are two Whitacre parishes, Over Whitacre, and Nether Whitacre, so records from both places have been carefully examined.

A man named John Bickley  (Anthony Bickley’s father)  had some children baptized in Nether Whitacre from 1611 to 1621, and there is also two entries in the same record concerning the burial of a man named Richard Bickley’s child and wife in 1619.  The Parish Register for Nether Whitacre is in good condition, thus Margaret nor Susannah, nor any other children of Anthony Bickley were baptized in that place.

The Parish register for Over Whitacre is sadly very badly fragmented, large portions having gone missing, and thus has possibly been lost important records that would no doubt figure in to  Orcutt, Bickley, and Edson family histories. We have knowledge, but no actual proof of a marriage of  Mary or Margaret Bickley to William Awcotte, or Alcott, having occurred June 17, 1635, at Over Whitacre, but as the parish records for that place are missing  we had previously been unable to either prove or disprove the fact, and further reseach has revealed that Margaret was the wife/consort of a man named John Horkott, the father of her 18 children.  See the mystery of William Orcutt solved.

A man named Anthony Bickley is known to have been a resident of Over Whitacre in 1630, when he is recorded to have served as a Parish Constable.

Anthony Bickley listed as Constable 1630  Over Whitacre

Beside the 1630 record placing Anthony in Over Whitacre there are some baptism and burials for four known children of his recorded in the near-by Kingsbury Parish register.  There are other previously unknown, or at least non-indexed entries, in the Kingsbury record for other Bickleys which may also be recovered.

It can be established beyond a doubt that Anthony Bickley married a woman named Katherine “Horkott”.     See the mystery of William Orcutt solved.

Margaret d. of Anthony Bickley  baptized  Nov. 23, 1617,  Kingsbury, Warwickshire.

Margaret is the entry after the burial record for Margery, the dau of Richard Bickley. It is listed as “Margery ________”  in the familysearch index, but can clearly be discerned as “Margaret” and as a daughter “of Anthony Bickley”.

Susannah d. of Anthony Bickley  baptized April 2, 1619,   Kingsbury, Warwickshire.

Susannah is the first entry under April at the very top of the page.  Anthony’s name looks to have been written “Anthony B.” and the writer ran out of room and wrote  the full last name higher.  The index entry on the right can also be discerned as “Bickley”

As well as the baptisms in the Kingsbury register I have located in the Horkott/Bickley Family Records in the front of the same parish register book a listing for the family of Anthony and Kathrene Horkott Bickley’s family.  This record does not have entries for the son that was buried in Kingsbury, nor the daughter Marie, but does have entries for 3 children not found in the Kingsbury register with the other children. The baptism dates for Margrett and Susannah are the same as the previous records.

Family Record of Anthony  & Kathrene Horkott Bickley of Over Whitacre, Warwickshire   Abstracted from a  Family Record  found in the Kingsbury, Warwickshire Parish Register of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. (October 26, 2018 Joel Thomas Orcutt)

The baptism records for Margaret and Susannah remained elusive to me for a long time, as I expect they have most people that have been looking for them.   The problem  has been the condition of the Kingsbury record is poor, barely legible  in places for many years. But the proof Anthony Bickley had a daughter named Susannah  and that they are both known as having been  “of Whittaker” (Over Whitacre) at the time of Susannah and Samuel Edson’s having married is no doubt very compelling evidence on it’s own she was in fact the daughter of Anthony Bickley.  Recent research has also revealed that Susannah Bickley Edson’s mother, Katherine, was an Horkott (Orcutt), as well as her sister Margaret  having been the wife of an  John Horkott.

Regarding Margaret, it should be pointed out that although we have for a long period of time presumed there was a Margaret Bickley,  daughter of Anthony Bickley in Over Whitacre, and that she was a sister of Susannah Bickley that married Samuel Edson, and thus having been the mother of William Orcutt, but this needed further proof.

We now know without a doubt that Susannah Bickley Edson did have a sister named Margaret,  who raised a large family out of wedlock with a man named John Horkott, and  John Horcutt and Margaret Bickley were in fact the parents of William Orcutt, who was thus, as we proffered many years ago, Susannah Bickley Edson’s nephew, and not her brother. We had the right sister to Susannah, and it was correct she was Anthony Bickley’s daughter, but it was John Horkott, not William,  who was William Orcutt’s father.

Anthony and Katherine Horkott Bickley married March 22 1615, and appear to have always resided in the actual parish of Over Whitacre, but used the Kingsbury Church as it was closer, or for another reason, which is in no way uncommon.

Perhaps Anthony Bickley was either a trades, or craftsman. For all we yet know he might have been a butcher, baker, or candlestick maker.  He might have been a joiner (carpenter), or a shoemaker, husbandman, or yeomen.   Hopefully that information, as well as additional facts will ultimately be revealed about this, our long past grandfather.
